PEARL Presents Electrical Reconditioning Standards to IAEI - International Association of Electrical Inspectors November 2010 Also available in PDF format.
Members of the PEARL Board of Directors recently gave a presentation on PEARL, it’s library of technical standards for electrical reconditioning, and best practices to the Las Vegas, Nevada Chapter of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI).
“Howard Herndon [of Southwest Electritech Services Co.] is a IAEI member and he contacted
PEARL to see if we might be interested in explaining our library of technical standards,” relates David Rosenfield, PEARL Director and President of ROMAC Supply (Commerce, CA). “We were
happy to oblige – it is Las Vegas after all – but even if it weren’t the ‘Jewel of the Desert,’ PEARL is dedicated to improving the safety of the electrical industry by promoting standards for electrical reconditioning, testing and inspection.
The response from the crowd was lively, and the Q&A showed that this chapter of IAEI is highly intelligent, and concerned about the issues surrounding reconditioned electrical equipment. These guys were genuinely interested in electrical safety in their client-area installations.” Malcom Frederick, PEARL Vice President and President of Coastal Switchgear and Controls Inc. (Angleton, TX), a Shermco Company, accompanied Rosenfield to the presentation.
According to Herndon and IAEI Chapter President, Randy Hunter, the inspectors appreciated the
guidance provided by PEARL’s association and standards. “PEARL is a great program,” says
Herndon. “The questions that came in to the audience focused around: Where are our local
rehabbers in relation to PEARL’s standards?”
“We’ve been trying to preach to our inspectors that they need to make sure that breakers are
tested before they get installed, that’s what NETA standards require, and that’s where PEARL’s
message really came across…It’s important to have a set of standards in place.”
While NETA’s standards cover in-field testing, the veteran association and ANSI standards
developer does not offer standards to recondition electrical equipment – only to test it. PEARL
reconditioning standards require that each device be tested before and after reconditioning, and all test results stored along with a unique serial number that matches the PEARL seal applied to the device by a PEARL certified electrical supplier and service company.
